Separando mezclas / Separating mixtures

Today we are mixing different substances, answering some questions about the mixtures, and students are going to decide which of the instruments on my table they are going to use in order to separate the mixture.

To separate the different mixtures they can use: different strainers, funnels, coffee filters, water, magnets and spoons.

They will also answer questions about the mixtures while they are working on them and after finishing the separation, to explain how they did it.

Mezcla 1 - Arena y piedrecitas / Mixture #1 - Sand and pebbles

Students mix sand and pebbles and stir it with a spoon. Working in groups, they decide that they can separate the mixture using a strainer, because the pebbles are much bigger than the sand grains. Some of them choose big strainers, so they make a sand mess on the table.

Mezcla 2 - Arena y limadura de hierro / Mixture #2 - Sand and iron fillings

Students mix sand and iron fillings. Some of them decide that they're separating it using strainers, but while doing it, they realize that it's not working. The right decision is the magnet, because iron fillings are attracted to magnets. It takes a long time, but all of them get rid of the fillings in the sand.

Mezcla 3 - Sal y pimienta / Mixture #3 - Salt and pepper

Little by little we are making our mixtures harder to separate, this one needs several steps instead of only one as we did in the previous mixtures. Some students try to separate the mixture using strainers, but it doesn't work. The grains of salt and pepper have a similar size.

Some other students try with a coffee filter, but both substances are solid, and none of them pass through the filter. They try adding water to the mixture, and when they stir it, the salt dissolves in the water, while pepper grains float. Some of my students now realize that they can use the filter, because the salt dissolved in the water and now can pass through the coffee filter, and the pepper will remain on the filter.

Now we have the pepper separated on the filter, and the salt in a cup, dissolved in the water, which is colored by the pepper. How do we separate now the salt and water mixture? Most of the kids agree on the fact that we need to heat up the water to make it evaporate. And what happens with the salt? Not very confidently, they say that it will remain in the bottom of the pot when all the water evaporates.

I do this step myself, because for safety reasons kids are not allowed to use stoves at high temperatures. We heat up the water, it starts evaporating, and when there's no more water left, at the bottom of the pot we can see the same amount of salt that we put in the mixture.

¿Flota un huevo? / Does an egg float?

We've been working on density, and the question for this experiment was "Does an egg float or sink in water?" None of my students was really sure about it. I told them that there's always a right answer: it depends on the density, of the water, and of the egg.

¡Vamos a verlo!

Something floats on water when its density is lower than the density of the water. So if the density of an egg is higher than the density of the water, it'll sink. If it's lower, it'll float. Let's see it!

To start, we pour 300 ml of water in a beaker, then we put the egg inside and... it sinks. That means that Egg Density > Water Density.

Having a look at this fact, what can we do to make it float? I want my egg to float! Without changing the egg, the only option is raising the density of the water, we need to make it higher.

To do so, we are going to put two spoons of salt in the water and mix it. When it is dissolved, we try again with the egg but it still sinks. We need more salt.

After adding two more spoons of salt, we try again and now it floats! This means that Egg Density < Water Density.

In some groups we tried the same experiment but using sugar instead of salt. We realized that we need more sugar than salt to raise the density of the water. To make it we needed eight spoons of sugar! And everything ends up very sticky.

¿El aire tiene masa? / Does air have mass?

¿El aire es materia? Si... no... no estamos seguros...

Is the air matter? Yes... no... we're not sure... First we need to know what matter is. Matter is everything that has volume and mass. Is quite clear that air occupies space, this is, it has volume. We can see it when we blow up a balloon. So now we need to know about the mass.

So today our question is going to be "Does air have mass?". The air over your head, the air that you breathe, does it have mass?

And we are going to try it using two balloons and a simple scale.

The first step will consist on comparing the mass of the two empty balloons. It sound obvious, but we need to do it for future questions. They have the same mass.

For the second step we are going to blow up the balloons, approximately with the same amount of air inside, this is, we need the balloons to have a similar size. Then we will compare the mass of both balloons. The scale is balanced, so they have the same mass.

In the last step we are going to pop one of the balloons. It is important to pick up all the small pieces of the balloon and put them on its side of the scale. Even with the popped balloon, the scale isn't balanced. We have some questions then.

Do both balloons, empty or not, have the same mass? Yes, we saw it in the first and second steps. If the scale is not balanced, does it mean that the balloon with air is heavier than the balloon without it? Yes! What's the difference between the empty balloon and the one with air? Obviously, the air inside. So... does the air have mass? Is the air matter? And he answer is YES to both questions.

Every time we go into the lab for experiments, we follow the scientific method, this is how real scientists work. We normally use a template that we found on Pinterest. It's really helpful!

First, we need to set the purpose of our experiment, that is to say, the question we want to answer.

Then, it comes the research. We normally do it in groups, sharing our previous experience about the question at stake, what we know, what we think about it, etc.

After that, now individually, we write down our hypothesis, which is what we think it's going to happen in the experiment. All the hypothesis are valid at this time, it doesn't matter if later we prove them right or wrong.

And now it's time for the experiment itself. We take notes about the step-by-step procedure and what happens, drawing pictures of every step. We also write down the materials we are using.

After the experiment, it is the moment to analyze its results, what happened and why.

And to finish, we go back to our hypothesis, and we reflect about whether we were right or wrong when we did it, and why.
