Camino de Santiago en bicicleta (Etapa #0) / St. Jacob's trail on a bike (Stage #0)

¡Hola!

Hi! Today I'm starting a new adventure, in fact it's a challenge. Going from Astorga (León) to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) riding my bike. The total journey is about 254 km, divided into 5 stages, that is, an average of 51 km each stage.

And why is it a challenge? Riding 50 km on the bike is not a problem for me, but I've never done it five days in a row. Also the elevation gain of the stages is way higher than I'm used to. And to complete the drama, I'm carrying all my luggage on the bike, around 10 kg of extra weight. Yesterday I tried riding the bike with everything on it, it's going to be slower than my regular bike journeys.

Mixing all these circumstances, the steep trails and whatever weather I find, you get that I'm so nervous right now, and it's going to last until tomorrow morning when the real journey starts.

I'm writing from my hostel in Astorga, called Albergue San Javier. Today it's been a long and boring driving day to get here. Later I'll get out of here to visit the city and I'll share some pictures. If you want to join me in this journey, I'll try to write after each stage. I'm sure your encouragement will help me finish "El Camino".

Volver a EEUU estas vacaciones / Back to the US for holidays

Right now we should be on a train to Madrid. Once there, we'd stay in a hotel close to the airport and we'd go to bed really early, as tomorrow we should be at 4 am to check our luggage.

And at 6 am, let's fly! First, destination Amsterdam, and from there, to our beloved Houston. Because we always said we'd be back, one of our drawbacks is that we normally do what we say. We were really looking forward to seeing all our friends and colleagues that live there, Spanish, American, Mexican, Puertorrican, Venezuelan, Ecuadorian, Colombian friends...

A Rockets game, a visit to our school where everybody should be back working after their Spring break, we also wanted to cross out some new places from our list, re-visit our favourite ones... hundreds of plans.

But everything fucked up. Two months ago we started listening on the news that a Chinese virus was ravaging, that it was going to spread quite fast around the world, but, you know, we didn't want to think that such remote news would end up affecting our trip.

As our departing date approached we started to worry that it would affect us, and so was it. And here we are, at home, confined, as most of the Spaniards, and half the world's population. It's been three weeks so far, and it hasn't finished yet, because although the optimistic case numbers, it will take time to erradicate this pandemic.

The beginning of the confinement isn't so bad, you have time to do lots of stuff, deep cleanings, change wardrobes, home organization, and so on. And TV, lots of TV. Thank God we are in the Netflix era, because spending such an amount of time at home listening to dreadful news could drive the sanest person crazy. You can devote time to activities you've been putting off for months or even years. Like writing a post on this blog.

We are confined because we are forced to do so, and because it is also our will. We do it for our own good, and for the others'. And everything's gonna be OK, and we'll travel again, and we'll write about our trips again. We'll be to a Rockets game, and to school, and we'll get to see everybody. We'll be back, and we'll be stronger. As the song says, what doesn't kill you makes you stronger, and this is not going to kill us. That's it. See y'all soon.

California and more

It was May 28th, and that meant the end of the academic year and... our desired holydays!! As we can't be still, the next day we were flying to Las Vegas to start our last trip of this American adventure, which would last a total of 12 nights.

As we said before, our first stop was the Sin City, which we visited in our Spring Break trip, but that time it was only one night, our first contact. This time we had two complete days and nights that we squeezed and enjoyd to the fullest doing what you are supossed to do in this city: eat, drink and gamble (video). If you add the David Copperfield permanent show and the Titanic exhibition, it turns into an unforgettable experience.

After those two nights, we picked up our rental car and started driving towards our next destination, Los Angeles (AKA L.A., so L.A. from now on).

L.A. is not what I´d call a "beautiful" or "charming" city. The downtown is full of homeless and there are not a lot of things to do or see. Anyways, we had a long walk there and visited the Grammy Museum (music awards), including a great exhibition about the 25 year career of the Backstreet Boys. We also saw the surrounding area of the Staples Center, where L.A. Lakers, Clippers, Sparks (basketball, NBA and WNBA) and Kings (hockey, NHL) play.

Although L.A. downtown is a bit disappointing, there are different areas in the outskirts that are worth paying a visit, such as Hollywood and its Walk of Fame, or the beach towns like Santa Monica and Venice beach, that we all remember thanks to "Baywatch", with David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson running on the sand to save someone's life. Not very far we also find Malibu beach, with just a few public access, as all the first line houses have their own back door to the beach. Unfortunately we couldn't enjoy as it was supossed, as you can see in some pictures, because we didn't have the best weather conditions.

The last day before leaving L.A. we went to the Warner Bros studios, in Hollywood. It was a terrific experience, they told us about movies and series shot in their studios and sets that we could see (Friends, Gilmore Girls, Avengers, The Big Bang Theory, Batman's cars museum, Ellen DeGeneres show...). We could take a ton of pictures, even one with an Oscar (a real one! it's so heavy!), however our favourite was the one at the coffee bar from the show Friends, the Central Perk.

Later that day we wandered  the Hollywood Walk of Fame, looking at all the stars on the floor, of movie actors, theatre actors and musicians and bands. After some days at the L.A. area, we headed North, as our next stop would be Sequoia National Park.

At Sequoia National Park there are the biggest living things on Earth. They are trees that can reach 330 ft height and 39 ft of diameter. Among all the sequoias, the one considered the biggest, the one with the highest amount of wood, is called General Sherman, which is 311 ft tall and 36 ft of diameter. There are some taller, some others with a bigger diameter, but none occupies a higher volume than General Sherman.

Our last day before arriving to San Francisco was devoted to drive the so-called "Big Sur", a road by the coast, connecting the cities of San Luis Obispo and Carmel-by-the-sea. As an anecdote, we can say that Clint Eastwood was mayor of this last city.

Big Sur is a road squeezed between the coast line of the Pacific ocean and a small mountain range, so there are only a few in and outs. It's full of big beaches, small coves, cliffs, and we could enjoy the presence of different groups of sea elephants that made some beaches their home. It is quite common to see dolphins, and also humpback whales on their Summer migration to the North looking for colder waters, but we weren't lucky enough to see them. Anyways, it was a great road and nature day.

And we finally got to San Francisco, beautiful city. We stayed at an AirBNB, in the Castro neighbourhood, gay spot of the city. It's a colourful place all year round, but specially in June, as the gay pride is celebrated all over the state.

We enjoyed the area and its nightlife, as well as we could walk the city, its famous slopes going up and down, and the cable-cars that ride the streets.

We also walked the area where the Golden Gate is, it's probably one of the most famous bridges in the world (if not the most). And we couldn't miss Alcatraz island and its old prison that inspired hundreds of novels and movies.

Along the Big Sur we saw sea elephants in their natural habitat. What we saw in San Francisco was a group of sea lions that settle a few years ago at Pier 39 of the bay (video).

After a few days at the city of the Golden Gate, the gay center of the world, the slopes city, where Levi Strauss made the first pair of jeans, we finished our last trip around USA. Now it is time to go back to Texas to finish everything and get ready to get back home to Spain. See you soon!!

Chicago greeted us with cold and rain. "The windy city" and there was no wind. Later we knew why it is called like this, and it is not only because of the weather. In its sport rivalry with Cincinatti, due to the intensity and anger of Chicago's people and politicians, Cicinatti's newspaper said that those people were full of "hot air". Later, in its fight against New York for hosting the 1893 World Fair, the same anger and intensity made New York media refer to their claim as "nonsense from that windy city".

We took the train from the airport to downtown. Here the train system is called "L train", because it sometimes goes "elevated" over the street, and also because it does a Loop around downtown. It took us a couple of stops to realize that the people that ride the train with you are somehow scary. On the downtown streets it happens the same, with the exception of one or two main avenues. Lots of homeless begging for money and strange people at every corner.

So it wasn't so weird that we saw a guy stealing a woman's purse at 10 am and next to the most important theater of the city, while we were waiting for our tour to start. He could scape easily running. There is no police at all on the streets, contrary to what happens in NYC, where you can see them at all times. Welcome to Chicago, the most dangerous city in the USA.

After this introduction to scare our readers, let's go to the point. As we said before, the weather didn't invite to walk outdoors, so we took the "scary train" again to go to the Field Museum, a natural history museum. On our way there we saw banners saying "Sue is back". We needed to go to see Sue, the most famous T-Rex fossil ever discovered, the most complete and the biggest at the same time.

After visiting the museum we learnt that Sue's discovery was full of controversy, politics, courts, indian reservations and the federal government of the US looking for profits. Here you can see the trailer of her documentary movie, yes, she's got a movie... sad but true...

¡Yuhu!

Now we always ask everywhere for a teacher´s discount. In this country they value our job, probably because they know their spoilt children, and also they know that for the American way of life, having a teacher's salary is not a lot and you can't do anything but survive. There are lots of teachers with a second part job to make ends meet. 10-20% off in some shops, $1 off beers in other places, and, in this case, free admission to the museum instead of the $48 for our two general admission tickets. Whohoo!

The Field Museum is amazing, huge, you can't see everything. Sue is now in her own room, marvelous. Her previous location at the main hall is now for Máximo, the biggest dinosaur that ever lived, a titanosaur found in Argentina.

After the museum, we couldn't wait to try the famous Chicago style pizza, and to do so we went to Giordano's. It is a thin crust pizza, with cheese and the rest of the ingredients on the lower part, a new thin dough layer over it, and the tomato sauce on top.

This pizza is smaller than de ones that we always have, but thicker, stuffed and delicious. Here they call it deep dish pizza or stuffed pizza. Don't go for it in a hurry, because wherever you order it, it takes 40-50 minutes to cook it in the brick oven. We really loved it. In New York they call it "tomato casserole", as they compete for the "best pizza" award.

We told you before that we did a walking tour around downtown, we did it again with Free tours by foot. In this occasion we were a bit (just a bit) dissapointed as we expected the guide to talk about history, gangsters, mob and so on. But the tour was basically about architecture, different styles, buildings and who did it. Not very exciting for us, and even less because the city is "brand new" after the fire that mostly destroyed it.

That fire happened in 1871. The reasons of the fire are not very clear, but most theories say that during an illegal bet session in one barn in the city, two gamblers got into a fight and one candle fell and started the fire. Having wooden houses and sidewalks helped the fire to spread. The wind also helped, of course. The city was on fire for three days, it was devastated and there were several hundreds of casualties. Only a few biuldings survived the fire, here you can see some of them.

Impresionante.

Even with the excess of architecture, it was an interesting walk. We learnt, for instance, that inside the State St Macy's there is a mosaic made by Tiffany (the one from the lamps, not the diamonds), made up of over a million and a half pieces of glass. We could see it and it was impressive.

The tour finished at Millennium Park, next to the famous sculpture called Cloud Gate, AKA "the bean", name that fits perfectly with its shape. A silver bean that reflects the surrounding reality its way, with curious photos as a result.

In this park there are other interesting sculptures like the Crown Fountain, by the Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, made up of screens showing human faces, that seem to spit when the water is running. Unfortunately, during winter season it's switched off because the pipes get frozen.

Close to the park we found the beginning of the Route 66, which we drove for a while during Spring Break. We plan to see the end of the road in june, at Santa Monica (California).

That day we also "climbed" to the skydeck at the highest skyscraper of Chicago, Willis Tower. It's 1450 ft height made it the highest building in the world when it was finished, from 1973 to 1998. Nowadays it is the second highest in the USA, after the One World Trade Center, which we visited las Christmas.

It has awesome views of the city and the Lake Michigan, and on the West side it has transparent balconies (ledges) that really scares you when setting foot on them, as you are literally "floating" over the abyss. Staff members let you be there one minute and take as many pictures as you want. I had vertigo and was a little bit shocked every time I needed to move a foot.

The next day we went for a walk next to the lake. We had nice weather compared to the previous days and only a few clouds anchored to the skyscrapers made the day not so perfect. The shore and beach at the lake are quite busy on Saturday mornings, as lots of people from Chicago go there to do their favourites activities. We saw lots of people riding bikes, skating or simply walking and running.

We also walked through the zoo, called Lincoln Park Zoo , one of the oldest in North America, as it was founded in 1868, one of a few that have free admission in the country. The zoo itself doesn't have anything special, it's small, but it is perfectly located close to downtown and the nice weather invited lots of families to have a walk there with their kids. We found lots of animal but we didn't like how they live there, such as the polar bear. Locked in small places, you can feel how stressed are some of them.

It was time for lunch, and we went to try the Chicago style hot dogs. The place we went to was Portillo's, and it's sucha a beautiful place. They sell hundreds of dogs every few minutes at peak hour, so they have lots of workers coordinated to make you wait just a little bit for your food. Their typical dog has, apart from the bun and the sausage, pickle, tomato, onion, a kind of mustard, and two really spicy peppers. Don't you dare to put some ketchup on it!

In the evening it was basketball time. If someone made this city famous in the 90's, it was the Chicago Bulls with Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and the rest of them. So we arrived at the United Center to see the Bulls game against Philadephia 76ers. It was clear that the Bulls were going to lose, they've had a terrible season, but we wanted to see Michael Jordan's statue there, the trophies of their six championships (91, 92, 93, 96, 97, 98), have a look at the shop to buy something and enjoy our time there. We couldn't help it, we are basket lovers! Here we share two videos, a "special" performance of the National Anthem, and the presentation of the team, awesome!

With this we said goodbye to Chicago, with our minds whinking about our next travel goals, going back to New Orleans, and our final trip to California. See you!!
