San Antonio

Decidimos visitar San Antonio un fin de semana cualquiera. Teníamos mucha curiosidad por ver qué tiene de especial esta ciudad ya que mucha gente nos recomendaba que no nos lo perdiésemos. Así que para allá que fuimos el fin de semana del 28 al 30 de septiembre.

We decided visiting San Antonio just for a weekend. We wanted to know how special it is due to the lots of recommendations we got. So there we went from the 28^th to 30^th September.

Y si que valió la pena totalmente el viaje. Una ciudad con mucho encanto, la cual tenemos a unas dos horas y media en coche y a la que prometemos volver en breve.

And the trip was totally worth it. It’s a very charming city only two hours and a half drive from home and which we promise  to visit again.

Llegamos a nuestro alojamiento viernes noche, y digo alojamiento porque por primera vez en nuestra vida elegimos Airbnb para ello. No sabíamos cómo iba a resultar esta experiencia, acostumbrados como estamos a alojarnos en hotel. Quedamos muy sorprendidos y satisfechos con la experiencia.

We got to our accommodation on Friday night. I said accommodation because for the first time we chose Airbnb. We didn’t know how was going to end up this experience as we’re used to staying in hotels. We were very surprised and satisfied with the experience.

La casa, con más de 100 años de historia, está situada en un barrio típicamente americano.  A unos 20 minutos andando del centro o unos 5 minutos en Uber. Nuestros anfitriones, Mark y Natasha, americano y keniata, un encanto. Congeniamos tan bien que empleamos parte del viernes noche contándonos la vida. Prometimos avisarles para salir a tomar algo la próxima vez que visitemos la ciudad, ya que en el resto del fin de semana no coincidimos. Con lo que por un lado nos hicieron sentir como en casa, y por otro teníamos total independencia e intimidad para ir y venir.

The house is more than 100 years old. It was located in a typical American neighbourhood only 20-minute walk or 5-minute by Uber to the city centre. Our hosts, Mark and Natasha, American and Kenyan, they were very very nice. We spent part of Friday night talking about our lifes. We promised we’ll let them know the next time we visit the city to go out together because we didn’t meet during the rest of the weekend. So we felt like home and we got total independence and intimacy to do as we wanted.

Después de despedirnos de Mark y Natasha ya era tarde para ir al centro así que decidimos quedarnos por el barrio, en el que teníamos dos “beer gardens” a solo unos minutos andando. Y así llegamos a la fábrica de cerveza Álamo, la cual tiene una terraza grande en la que puedes comer y beber e incluso tenían música en directo. Pulsa aquí para ver el vídeo.

After leaving Mark and Natasha we decided to stay in the neighbourhood because it was late to go to the city centre. We had two beer gardens only a few minute walk. We got to the Alamo Brewery and in its beer garden you can eat and drink and they even had live music. Click here to see a video.

Después de un par de cervezas decidimos irnos a descansar para empezar el día siguiente con fuerzas.

After a couple of pints we decided to go home and have some rest for the next day.

A las 10 de la mañana estábamos ya en el centro con las pilas cargadas preparados para un tour gratuito que habíamos reservado. Nuestro guía tuvo tiempo de contarnos un par de cosas interesantes de la ciudad cuando empezó a llover a cántaros.

At 10 am we were ready in the city centre to go on a free tour. Our tour guide had time to tell us a couple of interesting things about the city when suddenly it started raining cats and dogs.

Tuvo tiempo de hablarnos del famoso paseo del río, en parte construido para evitar las inundaciones que estaba sufriendo la ciudad cada vez que el caudal subía. Su solución fue desviar parte del caudal bordeando la ciudad y en el curso natural del río construyeron la que es la atracción principal de la ciudad. Un paseo a lo largo del río, en el que en las zonas donde hay bares y restaurantes permitieron abrir una terraza al mismo. Es tan popular que en horas punta se corre el riesgo de algún remojón que otro, debido a la gran cantidad de gente intentando circular por allí. También se ofrecen paseos en barquitas turísticas.

Our tour guide had time to talk about the famous river walk, which was built to prevent floods. The solution for the floods was to detour part of the river course around the city, and in its place they built which is one of the main attractions of San Antonio. A long walk path along the old river course, where most of the pubs and restaurants have terraces. It´s so popular that at peak times is very crowded and it´s not difficult to fall into the water. Small boat touristic tours are also offered to the tourists.

Tuvimos que esperar un buen rato a que dejase de llover y ya nos quedó el tiempo justo para visitar El Álamo e irnos a comer. El Álamo es una de las misiones que se construyeron en San Antonio para convertir a los nativos a la fe católica. En total hay cinco misiones, contando El Álamo, aunque nunca se terminó de construir y es más conocido por la batalla que tuvo lugar allí, donde el ejército tejano estuvo 13 días defendiéndose del ejército mejicano, que finalmente consiguió entrar y mató a casi todos los soldados  tejanos, que prefirieron morir allí antes que rendirse, y mantuvieron orgullosos su bandera tejana hasta el final.

We had to wait for the rain to stop and then we only had time to visit The Alamo and go for lunch. The Alamo is one of the missions that were built in San Antonio area to introduce the natives in the Catholic religion. There are five missions in San Antonio, including The Alamo, although they never finished it and is more popular because of the battle that took place there. The Texan soldiers were able to defend themselves for13 days from Mexican troops siege until they got inside The Alamo and killed almost all Texan defenders, who preferred to die before surrender, waiving proudly the Texas flag until the end.

Después fuimos a comer a una barbacoa tejana, como no, que nos habían recomendado varias personas y ¡¡fue un acierto!!

After The Alamo we went for lunch to a Texas BBQ, that was recommended by several people and it was perfect!!

Necesitábamos un buen paseo después de esa comilona así que nos fuimos a dar una vuelta por el Japanese Tea Garden. Un parque muy bonito, de estilo japonés, que está situado dentro de otro parque más grande en el que también se puede visitar, por ejemplo, el zoo de San Antonio.  También hay un tren turístico que te lleva de una zona a otra del parque.

We needed a walk after such a meal so we went for a walk to the Japanese Tea Garden. It’s a beautiful park, Japanese style, that is located in a bigger park where you can visit, for instance, San Antonio Zoo. There is a touristic train that takes you to the different places of the park.

Como somos así de bestias, después de este agradable paseo, nos fuimos andando hasta Pearl Brewery. Según Google Maps se tarda 43 minutos, pero a nosotros se nos hizo muuuucho más largo. Sin embargo, la caminata valió la pena. Pearl Brewery es una antigua fábrica de cerveza que fue convertida en una zona de ocio. La merecida cerveza cayó, claro.

As we’re such idiots, we went walking to Pearl Brewery. According to Google Maps it takes 43 minutes walking to get there, but for us seemed much longer. On the other hand, the long walk was worth it. Pearl Brewery is an old brewery that was transformed into bars and restaurants. We had our well-deserved beer, of course.

Después de descansar un rato en casa, salimos a cenar y a dar una vuelta por el paseo del río. Nos decidimos por Mad Dogs, un pub británico en el paseo del río, con buena comida y música en directo. Después de cenar fuimos a tomarnos la última a un bar muy muy curioso… Moses Roses’s Hideout, en el que para acceder al bar tienes que adivinar dónde está la puerta!!! Casi nos vamos del sitio creyendo que nos habíamos equivocado de local… Tras eso, como ya no nos quedaban fuerzas para más, a casita a descansar.

After a while at home having a rest, we went out for dinner to the river walk. We went to Mad Dogs, a British pub by the walk, with good food and live music. Thne we went for a drink to  a very particular bar… Moses Rose’s Hideout, where to go into the pub you have to discover where the door is. We almost left thinking that we went into the wrong place… After that we had no strength for more so we went home.

Al día siguiente, ya con las pilas cargadas, nos decidimos por visitar las misiones restantes. Son cuatro en total, situadas a lo largo del curso del río. Primero visitamos la Misión Concepción, después Misión San José, Misión San Juan y por último la Misión Espada. Básicamente, son recintos amurallados donde los frailes Franciscanos educaban a los indios nativos en el cristianismo, dentro de los cuales hay iglesias, donde aprendían la fe católica, y además aprendían actividades como trabajar la tierra, usar el telar o la ganadería.

The next day, now full of energy, we decided to visit the rest of the missions. There are four of them, located along the San Antonio river. First we visited Mission Concepción, then Mission San José, Mission San Juan and finally Mission Espada. Basically they are walled facilities where Franciscan monks taught native Indians in the religion, and inside them you can find small churches where they learnt the Christian faith. In addition, they learnt different activities such as agriculture, sewing, and ranching.

Actualmente esas iglesias siguen en funcionamiento, y algunos de los descendientes de los primeros nativos vienen cada fin de semana desde distintos puntos de Texas para asistir.

Nowadays those churches are still working, and some of the descendants of the first natives that lived there go there every Sunday from different parts of Texas.

En definitiva, una bonita ciudad a la que nos gustaría volver otro fin de semana más adelante, para conocerla un poco mejor. Y por supuesto para ver jugar en directo al mejor embajador de España en Texas, Pau Gasol.

To finish, a really nice city that we´d like to visit again to know it a little bit better. And, of course, to see a live game of the best Spanish ambassador in Texas, Pau Gasol.

Labor day, o día del trabajo, uno de los festivos más importantes en EEUU en el que se conmemoran todos las contribuciones que los trabajadores han puesto para la grandeza, prosperidad, leyes y bienestar del país (traducido de Wikipedia, muy patriótico). Se celebra el primer lunes de septiembre, con lo que llegamos a nuestro primer fin de semana largo de esta aventura, el que decidimos pasar en la capital del estado, Austin.

Labor day is one of the most important public holiday in USA. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws, and well-being of the country (Wikipedia def. very patriotic). It happens the first Monday of September, so we decided to celebrate our first bank holidays in the capitol of the State, Austin.

Sábado 1 de septiembre / Saturday, 1^st September.

Con las maletas ya preparadas arrancamos motores. Como queríamos ver una muestra de la Texas profunda, decidimos dar un pequeño rodeo antes de llegar a nuestro destino. En este pequeño viaje de carretera salimos de Katy y pasamos por Luling, Lockhart, Parque Regional Blue Hole y Fredericksburg para por fin llegar a nuestro destino, Austin. Un total de 298 millas que equivale a unos 480 Km.

After packing our luggage, we are ready to hit the road. As we wanted to have a look to the deep Texas, we planned have a little roadtrip. Departing from Katy, we visited Luling, Lockhart, Blue Hole Regional Park and Fredericksburg and finally reaching our final destination, Austin. 298 miles in total, more or less 480 kilometers.

Luling es un pequeño pueblo, en el condado de Caldwell y Guadalupe, donde se vivía de la construcción del ferrocarril y la agricultura, hasta que se descubrieron cantidad de pozos petrolíferos en la zona, con lo que pasó a ser el sustento económico.

Luling is a small town in Caldwell and Guadalupe county. Their main economic activities were building the railroad and agriculture until they found lots of oil and it became the main economic activity.

Están orgullosos de sus sandias, las cuales tienen un tamaño considerable, tanto que incluso organizan anualmente el concurso de lanzamiento de semillas de sandía, que básicamente consiste en un concurso en el que el ganador es el que es capaz de escupir más lejos la semilla de la sandía, competencia directa con el lanzamiento de hueso de oliva de Cieza.

In Luling they are proud of their watermelons, which are huge, and they also organize a contest where the winner is the one that is able to spit the watermelon seed further.

Un pueblo curioso donde los haya, se caracteriza por su tanque de agua, el que parece una sandía, como no. Nos gustó mucho pasear por la calle principal así como visitar su particular cementerio local.

It’s a very particular town, its water tank is particular as it looks like a watermelon, of course. We enjoyed a lot walking its main street as well as visiting its local cemetery.

Nuestra siguiente parada es Lockhart, más conocido por sus barbacoas tejanas. Probamos suerte en Black’s Barbacue, la barbacoa tejana más antigua que pertenece a la misma familia desde 1932.

Our next stop was Lockhart, famous because of its Texas Barbacues. We went to Black’s Barbacue, Texas oldest BBQ owned by the same family, since 1932.

Y tras guardar una considerable cola, allí no puedes ir con prisas, llegó la hora de pedir… Y funciona de la siguiente manera, primero eliges los acompañamientos, de los cuales elegimos ensalada de patatas, arroz y puré de patatas y a continuación eliges la carne al peso o la unidad, nosotros nos decidimos por costillas y salchichas. Todo BUENÍSIMO, el sabor ahumado de la carne es indescriptible, la espera valió la pena.

After waiting in line for a little while, you cannot go if you’re in a rush, it was out time to order… and it works as it follows, first you choose your sides. We went for potato salad, rice and mashed potatoes with gravy. Second you choose your meat, by weight or by unit. We chose ribs and sausages. Everything was delicious, the smoky flavour of the meat was indescribable, the waiting was worth it.

Nuestra siguiente parada fue el parque regional Blue Hole. Hacía mushiiisimo calor pero teníamos que ver qué era lo que atraía a tantísima gente. Nos cruzábamos con gente sacando del coche todo tipo de inflables, neveras, sillas…

Next we went to Blue Hole Regional Park. Although It was very very hot, we had to check what was getting so many people there. We saw lots of people taking from their car all kind of beach stuff, inflatables, coolers, chairs…

El parque está situado junto a un arroyo  llamado Cypress, que está habilitado para el baño, junto al que hay una explanada donde la gente aprovecha para tomar el sol, leer, etc… Poco relajante porque no es muy grande y la gente estaba un poco amontonada…

The park is next to Cypress Creek, which is enabled for swimming. Next to it there is a space where you can suntan, read, etc… But it’s not relaxing because it’s quite small and it was crowded…

Al no ir a bañarnos pudimos entrar sin pagar pero si quieres disfrutar de un baño en el río, tienes que haber hecho una reserva previa y pagar 10 dólares por adulto.

We didn’t want to swim so we could get in for free but if you are planning get a bath you’d have to make a reservation and pay your ticket, 10 dollar for adults.

La última parada antes de nuestro destino fue Fredericksburg. Una ciudad fundada por alemanes, en la que todavía se nota la influencia Baviera. Pensada para el turista, su calle principal, Main Street, está llena de tiendas en las que además puedes disfrutar de tu bebida mientras buscas ese atuendo cowboy, que no te vas a volver a poner en la vida, o detalles para toda la familia. En esta zona hay distintas bodegas y desde Fredericksburg salen autobuses para hacer visitas y catas en las mismas. Un pueblo interesante, en el que se encuentra el Museo de la Guerra del Pacífico, pero nos estábamos quedando sin tiempo ya que queríamos llegar a Austin antes de que anocheciera.

Our last stop before our last destination was Fredericksburg. A town founded by Germans, where you still can notice their influence. Thought for the tourists, its Main Street is full of shops where you can also enjoy your drink while looking for that cowboy outfit you’ll never wear after the first time or souvenirs for everybody. In this area there are several wineries and from Fredericksburg you can take a bus to visit them all and attend to wine tastings there. It´s an interesting town, home of the Pacific War Museum, but we were running out of time and we needed to get to Austin before the sunset.

Llegados a Austin e instalados, decidimos salir a tomar una cerveza, así que pusimos rumbo a la calle Sexta sin saber muy bien lo que nos esperaba allí. Y para sorpresa nos encontramos con una calle cortada al tráfico, con un bar tras otro en cada acera, y con música en directo en todos y cada uno de ellos.

Once settled in our apartment, we decided to go out to have a beer, so we headed 6^th Street without any expectations. Surprisingly we found a street closed to traffic Saturday nights, and one bar after another, both sides of the street, all of them with live music.

Nos decidimos por uno con música country, el grupo que tocaba era bastante bueno, y el local se fue llenando poco a poco (pincha aquí para ver video). Acostumbrados a los horarios españoles, no nos fue difícil estar allí hasta casi la hora de cierre de los locales nocturnos en el estado, las 2 a.m.

We decided to go into a bar with country music, the band was pretty great and it ended up crowded (click here to see a video). Being used to the Spanish schedules, it wasn’t hard to be there almost to the closing time of the premises in the state, 2 a.m.

Domingo 2 de septiembre / Sunday, September 2^nd

Nos levantamos y ponemos rumbo al Capitolio de Texas, sede del parlamento del estado. Allí nos unimos a un grupo para realizar un tour gratuito andando por Austin que durará unas dos horas. Es la mejor manera de empezar con una ciudad, que te expliquen un poco y te enseñen los sitios más interesantes.

We woke up and went to the Texas Capitol, where the Texan Congress and Senate are. There we joined a group for a walking free tour at downtown, it last about two hours. It's the best way to start to know a city, a little bit of explanation and the most important places or landmarks.

Después del paseo por la ciudad, volvemos al capitolio para verlo más detenidamente.

La guía nos recomienda las hamburguesas en un bar de la calle Sexta, Casino El Camino. Y allí vimos jugar a nuestro Real Murcia. Las hamburguesas buenísimas, por cierto. El resto del día lo pasamos paseando por la ciudad.

After the walk, we came back to the Capitol, to visit it inside. The guide recommended the burgers in a pub on the 6th street, Casino El Camino. And there we had them and watched our Real Murcia game live! Burgers were great, by the way. The rest of the day we were walking around the city.

Y andando y andando, llegamos a la hora de la puesta de sol, y nos dirigimos al puente de la calle Congress, sobre el río Colorado. A esa hora, más de un millón de murciélagos que viven dentro de la estructura del puente, salen a cenar, todos a la vez, formando curiosas nubes de distintas formas en el aire. Es un espectáculo y congrega a cientos de personas no solo a ambas orillas del río, sino también a todo lo largo del puente y en el río en barcos y kayaks. And step by step, we got to the sunset time, and we went to Congress street bridge, over the Colorado river. At that time, over a million bats that live in the structure of the bridge, go out for dinner, all together, forming curious clouds of different shapes in the air. It’s a show that brings together hundreds of people not only at both riverbanks, but also all along the bridge and on boats and kayaks. Tras un intenso día sin parar de caminar, nos retiramos a descansar. Mañana todavía nos quedan unas cuantas cosas por ver en Austin antes de poner camino de vuelta a casa.

After such an intense walking day, we went back to our apartment to rest. Tomorrow there are still a few places to visit in Austin before we go back home.

Lunes, 3 de septiembre / Monday, September 3^rd

Hoy toca coger (perdón, “agarrar”) el coche, ya que lo que vamos a ver está un poco más lejos del centro de la ciudad. Primero nos dirigimos a Hope Outdoor Gallery, un “museo” de grafiti al aire libre, digno de ver pero un poco descuidado. Hay algunos muy buenos, pero casi todos tapados por otros dibujos más cutres o simples firmas.

Today we need to take the car, because the places we’re visiting are not so close to the city centre. First we go to the Hope Outdoor Gallery, a graffiti museum outdoors, not bad but a little bit abandoned. There are some good graffiti, but most of them overlapped by bad ones or just signatures.

Más tarde vamos a Barton Springs Municipal Pools. Se trata de unas piscinas que han construido desviando parte del caudal del río. Están bastante concurridas por ser un día festivo, la gente suele ir a pasar el día, bañarse y hacer picnic.

Later we went to Barton Springs Municipal Pools. They are big pools they have built using the water from the river. They’re quite busy as it is a holyday, and people normally go there for a picnic, a swim and stay the whole day.

Y ya rumbo a casa, han sido solo tres días pero bastante intensos y teníamos que reponer fuerzas para la próxima que teníamos en mente: San Antonio.

Then on our way home, there were only three days but pretty busy and we had to rest for our next small trip: San Antonio.

Separando mezclas / Separating mixtures

Hoy trabajamos mezclando diferentes sustancias, respondiendo preguntas sobre las mezclas, y los estudiantes van a decidir cuál de los instrumentos que hay sobre mi mesa quieren utilizar para separar las mezclas.

Today we are mixing different substances, answering some questions about the mixtures, and students are going to decide which of the instruments on my table they are going to use in order to separate the mixture.

Para separar las diferentes mezclas pueden usar: diferentes coladores, embudos, filtros de café, agua, imanes y cucharas.

To separate the different mixtures they can use: different strainers, funnels, coffee filters, water, magnets and spoons.

También responderán preguntas sobre las mezclas mientras trabajan con ellas y después de terminar la separación, para explicar cómo lo hicieron.

They will also answer questions about the mixtures while they are working on them and after finishing the separation, to explain how they did it.

Mezcla 1 - Arena y piedrecitas / Mixture #1 - Sand and pebbles

Los estudiantes mezclan la arena y las piedras y lo remueven bien con una cuchara. Trabajando en grupos, deciden que pueden separar la mezcla usando un colador, porque las piedras son mucho mas grandes que los granos de la arena. Algunos eligen un colador de los grandes, por lo que parte de la arena queda ensuciando la mesa.

Students mix sand and pebbles and stir it with a spoon. Working in groups, they decide that they can separate the mixture using a strainer, because the pebbles are much bigger than the sand grains. Some of them choose big strainers, so they make a sand mess on the table.

Mezcla 2 - Arena y limadura de hierro / Mixture #2 - Sand and iron fillings

Los estudiantes mezclan bien la arena y la limadura de hierro. Algunos deciden que lo van a separar con un colador, pero mientras lo hacen se dan cuenta de que no funciona. La decisión correcta es utilizar un imán, ya que la limadura de hierro es atraída por el imán. Nos lleva un buen rato, pero todos consiguen separar la mezcla por completo.

Students mix sand and iron fillings. Some of them decide that they're separating it using strainers, but while doing it, they realize that it's not working. The right decision is the magnet, because iron fillings are attracted to magnets. It takes a long time, but all of them get rid of the fillings in the sand.

Mezcla 3 - Sal y pimienta / Mixture #3 - Salt and pepper

Poco a poco vamos complicando las mezclas, ya que esta necesita de varios procesos en lugar de uno solo para lograr la separación. Algunos estudiantes lo intentan con distintos coladores, pero no funciona. Los granos de sal y de pimienta son de un tamaño similar.

Little by little we are making our mixtures harder to separate, this one needs several steps instead of only one as we did in the previous mixtures. Some students try to separate the mixture using strainers, but it doesn't work. The grains of salt and pepper have a similar size.

Otros prueban con un filtro de café, pero ambos granos son sólidos y ningún solido atraviesa el papel de filtro. Prueban añadiendo agua a la mezcla, y al agitarla la sal se disuelve y la pimienta queda flotando. Algunos alumnos ya se dan cuenta de que ahora si que se puede utilizar el filtro de café, ya que la sal se ha disuelto en el agua y ahora si que atravesará el filtro, mientras que la pimienta quedará en él.

Some other students try with a coffee filter, but both substances are solid, and none of them pass through the filter. They try adding water to the mixture, and when they stir it, the salt dissolves in the water, while pepper grains float. Some of my students now realize that they can use the filter, because the salt dissolved in the water and now can pass through the coffee filter, and the pepper will remain on the filter.

Ahora tenemos la pimienta en el filtro y la sal en un vaso, disuelta en agua, y coloreada por la pimienta. ¿Cómo separamos ahora la sal y el agua? Casi todos los alumnos están de acuerdo en que necesitamos calentar el agua, para que se evapore. ¿Y qué pasa con la sal? Sin mucha confianza me dicen que se quedará en el fondo del cazo cuando toda el agua se evapore.

Now we have the pepper separated on the filter, and the salt in a cup, dissolved in the water, which is colored by the pepper. How do we separate now the salt and water mixture? Most of the kids agree on the fact that we need to heat up the water to make it evaporate. And what happens with the salt? Not very confidently, they say that it will remain in the bottom of the pot when all the water evaporates.

Esta operación la llevo a cabo yo mismo, ya que por razones de seguridad los estudiantes no usan instrumentos que trabajan a temperaturas elevadas. Calentamos el agua, se empieza a evaporar, y cuando ya no nos queda mas agua, en el fondo del cazo tenemos la cantidad de sal que había en la mezcla.

I do this step myself, because for safety reasons kids are not allowed to use stoves at high temperatures. We heat up the water, it starts evaporating, and when there's no more water left, at the bottom of the pot we can see the same amount of salt that we put in the mixture.
