Today it is the last stage of this Camino Francés, getting to Santiago de Compostela and its iconic Obradoiro square. It is the shortest stage of all, around 40 km, but still quite hard.

I started around 8 am, when there is enough daylight, and just after leaving Arzúa I got into a forest area with lots of ups and downs.

There are lots of walking pilgrims to pass and the trail is really muddy because of last night rain, so my pace is quite slow.

After having lunch halfway to our goal, in the town of O Pedrouzo, I go back to the trail that takes me, after really hard ramps, around Santiago de Compostela airport.

Once you go around the airport runway, a fast downhill leads you to the last climb of the Camino de Santiago, this is, the climb to Monte do Gozo. From up there finally you can see Santiago and its cathedral.

Then going down to the city, with lots of people on the streets, y arrival at Obradoiro square. Mission accomplished!

Thank you all for your support and for following me in this adventure!

Etapa / Stage #4: Portomarin - Arzúa

Cuarta etapa terminada.

Fourth stage finished. Tomorrow, if everything is ok, I'll get to Santiago de Compostela. I say so because today has been a really tough day for different reasons.

First, the amount of days, distance and elevation gain. I've never cycled 5 days in a row. And that I can feel it in my legs.

And second, the weather, as since the beginning of the stage the fog and rain were constant, and pouring rain sometimes. I had to stop several times tonwait  for it to calm a bit.

Today was another "leg breaking" stage as well, continuous ups and downs, hard ones to be honest. The trail was also full of mud and puddles. What a challenge!

Today I spent most of the stage with company, Maite and Jorge, from Castalla (Alicante). We've been crossing paths since stage one. Sometimes it's nice to have some company and conversation with other cyclists.

Etapa / Stage #3: La Laguna - Portomarin

Today I did have breakfast at the hostel La Escuela, in La Laguna. Milk coffee and such a piece of chocolate spongecake that I had to save half of it for the journey.

Because I had to save some energy to climb the remaining part of O Cebreiro and take this stage, the longest and hardest of all.

The final part of O Cebreiro was as hard as the beginning, and when younget there you need to keep climbing a couple more mountain passes, Alto de San Roque and Puerto del Pollo.

After that there is a long way downhill and I stopped at Samos. Another coffee and the rest of the spongecake.

From there I continued towards Sarria, where there's both trails and roads, uphills and downhills that get all the energy of your legs.

From Sarria I went to Portomarin, and the road starts going up for several km, and later you turn right and take the long fun trail that gets you to the end of the stage, with the last kilometers going downhill. I ended up doing 73 km and 1100 meters climbing.

Etapa / Stage #2 - Ponferrada - La Laguna

Today I started at 8am and it was really cold, around 10°C. My first visit before leaving Ponferrada was the stadium "El Toralin", where my team Real Murcia last got promoted to the first division, in 2007.

As it was cold I stopped soon for breakfast, in the 7th km of the stage. The fields and residential areas in the outskirts of Ponferrada are really nice.

Once you cross over the A-6 highway, you get into an amazing vineyard area that leads you to Cacabelos town. After this town you start climbing, sometimes easy and sometimes not so easy, but nothing compared with the mountain pass I did yesterday, or the one that awaits at the end of this stage.

After riding for a while with a catalan cyclist, Carles, I got to Las Herrerias, where the climb to O Cebreiro starts. I stopped there to rest a little and get strength for the oncoming effort.

Once the climb started, I found the steepest ramps I've ever done. Really hard ones, up to 17%, being constantly between 10 and 12%. And it was even psicologically harder, as there's no rest, you can't see the end of the ramps, and after one finishes, another even harder starts.

Halfway to the end I stopped to rest body and mind, and I resumed cycling this hard road until La Laguna, where I'm staying for the night. Tomorrow morning I'll start doing the remaining 2 km to O Cebreiro.

Etapa / Stage #1 - Astorga - Ponferrada

Yesterday, at Astorga Cathedral, I got my "credencial" (2€), kind of a passport where you collect stamps in the different places you go to (churches, hostels, shops, bar, restautants...). You need at least two stamps each day to show at the end of your trip where you started and the number of stages you did. Once you've finished el camino, at the Pilgrims Office in Santiago, you can show it and ask for your "Compostela", which is a certificate on your name, that says that you finished El Camino and the distance you did. To get it you need to walk at least 100 km or cycle at least 200 km.

This morning I left Astorga towards Ponferrada. Most of the time the trail goes next to a road with no traffic, so I did some parts of the stage on the trail, and some others on the road. Also taking into account the width of the trail and the amount of pilgrims walking on it.

From the beginning the trail was a little uphill, consistently. As I didn't get any breakfast in Astorga, I stopped for a coffee around 8 km after the start. Then the road was more and more steep, I was climbing the Foncebadón mountain pass.

It looked it was never going to end, not even after the village also called Foncebadón. So I kept cycling a little bit higher to the Cruz de Hierro (Iron cross). Not yet, there were a couple more km with the most difficult slopes, until the road turned downhill, it was really fast (and dangerous) to Ponferrada.

Same as yesterday, a quick bite and resting at Albergue El Templarín, write this blog and a well deserved nap, and after that a walk around the city.

Camino de Santiago en bicicleta (Etapa #0) / St. Jacob's trail on a bike (Stage #0)

¡Hola!

Hi! Today I'm starting a new adventure, in fact it's a challenge. Going from Astorga (León) to Santiago de Compostela (Galicia) riding my bike. The total journey is about 254 km, divided into 5 stages, that is, an average of 51 km each stage.

And why is it a challenge? Riding 50 km on the bike is not a problem for me, but I've never done it five days in a row. Also the elevation gain of the stages is way higher than I'm used to. And to complete the drama, I'm carrying all my luggage on the bike, around 10 kg of extra weight. Yesterday I tried riding the bike with everything on it, it's going to be slower than my regular bike journeys.

Mixing all these circumstances, the steep trails and whatever weather I find, you get that I'm so nervous right now, and it's going to last until tomorrow morning when the real journey starts.

I'm writing from my hostel in Astorga, called Albergue San Javier. Today it's been a long and boring driving day to get here. Later I'll get out of here to visit the city and I'll share some pictures. If you want to join me in this journey, I'll try to write after each stage. I'm sure your encouragement will help me finish "El Camino".
