¡Hola! Por fin tras la vuelta a España y el ponernos al día con muchos de nuestros amigos de aquí, encontramos el momento de volver a escribir en el blog, ya que todavía quedan muchas cosas y experiencias que contar sobre nuestra estancia en EEUU.

Hi! After our journey back to Spain and catching up with lots of relatives and friends here, we finally found the moment to post again on the blog, as we still have tons of interesting information and experiences about our time in the USA.

Y lo primero es hablar sobre conducir en Estados Unidos. Lo primero que debes saber es que casi el 100% de los coches funcionan con gasolina, no con diesel/gasoil como la mayoría de los vehículos en España. Igualmente casi la totalidad de los vehículos americanos son de transmisión automática, sin marchas. No te preocupes si nunca has conducido uno, es sencillo y te acostumbras rápido, aunque nadie te librará de un par de frenazos bruscos al principio cuando tu pie izquierdo por instinto pise el freno, pensando que es embrague. Olvídate, el pie izquierdo no se usa para nada.

And to start, we are going to talk about driving in the USA. The first thing you should know is that almost all the cars in the US work with gasoline, not diesel as most cars in Spain. And almost all of the have automatic transmission, with no manual gearbox. Don't panic if you have never driven an automatic car, it's easy and you'll get used to it really soon, although you'll sure hit your brakes in the beginning, when your left foot instinctly steps on the brake pedal, as there's no clutch pedal. Forget about using your left foot for anything!

En Estados unidos conducen por la derecha, como nosotros, así que por eso no hay que preocuparse, pero otras cosas las hacen de forma distinta, y hay que aprenderlas cuanto antes. Por ejemplo, los semáforos se encuentran al otro lado del cruce en el que debes pararte, por lo cual si no hay nadie y vas pensando en parar justo antes del semáforo, te habrás metido dentro de la intersección, cuidado con eso al principio.

In the US they drive on the right, as in Spain, so there's no problem about it, but they do some other things in a different way, and you'd better know them as soon as possible. For instance, traffic lights are located opposite the junction, so if there's nobody there and you stop next to the light, as we do in Spain, watch out, you're in the middle of the junction and that can be really dangeorus.

Apenas vas a encontrar rotondas, casi todo son cruces con señales de STOP. Muchas veces una en cada carril que llega al cruce (all way). En este caso, se entra al cruce por orden de llegada a la señal, no como en España que a igualdad de preferencia se cede el paso al que viene por la derecha.

You will hardly find roundabouts, most of the junctions have STOP signs. And lots of junctions have a Stop sign for each lane (all way). In that case, it goes first in the junction the one that got to its sign first. Remember that in Spain we give way to the one at our right side.

Otro detalle distinto ocurre en los cruces regulados con semáforo. Aunque esté el semáforo en rojo, si vas a girar a la derecha, puedes hacer un Stop y si no viene nadie, saltarte el semáforo. ¡Es totalmente legal!

Another aspect you should know is that on a junction with lights, if you're turning right, even though the light is red, if there's not a car coming, you can jump it and turn right just by doing a brief stop. It's legal! 

Hablemos ahora del carnet que necesitas para conducir. Aquí te van a decir que puedes ir con el carnet de conducir internacional que puedes sacarte en tráfico, renovable cada año, pero la realidad es bien distinta, y depende del estado en el que conduzcas. En mi caso, en Texas, el carnet internacional es válido tres meses, y por mucho que te empeñes no vas a convencer al policía que te pare de lo contrario. Tres meses desde que entras en EEUU, y ellos saben perfectamente cuando entraste.

Let's talk now about the driving license you need to drive in the US. Here in Spain you will be told that you can use your international driving license, and renew it every year, but this is far from reality there, and it depends on the state you're driving. In my case, in Texas, your international driving license works for only three months, and don't try to convince an officer about international laws. Three months since you entered the country, and they can find out when it was easily.

Así que lo que toca una vez establecidos y comenzada la rutina de trabajo, es sacarte el carnet de conducir de tu estado. En el caso de Texas, tienes que dirigirte a uno de los centros de tráfico del estado, presentar la documentación necesaria, pasar un test de visión y hacer un test en un ordenador. Yo lo encontré bastante fácil, lo aprobé a la primera, y mi recomendación es que lo hagas en inglés, ya que el español/mexicano puede ser confuso o usar palabras que no conozcas. Esta parte cuesta unos $30-$40. Tras el test, queda hacer la parte práctica. Es gratuita si la haces allí, pero suelen darte un tiempo de espera de unos 6 meses, así que puedes ir a una autoescuela donde te cobran unos $75 y lo haces con ellos en menos de una semana. El práctico es ridículamente sencillo, con tu propio coche si quieres, circular por un barrio a la velocidad que ponga, es decir, muy lento, pararte en los STOP y semáforos, y luego aparcar entre dos conos.

So once settled and started with our working routine, we need to get our State driving license. In Texas, you need to go to any Texas Department of Public Safety and apply for it showing all the documents they need. You will have to pass a vision test and a computer test. I found it quite easy and I passed it the frist time, and I recommend to do it in English, as the Mexican/Spanish version is confusing and has some words you literally don't know. This part costs about $30-$40. After the test, you need to do the driving part. It's free if you do it with them, but you will need to wait about 6 months, so if you don't have that time, you can go to any driving school and do it with them within a week, just paying about $75. It is really easy, with your own car if you want, driving around a neighborhood, very slow, stopping at stop signs and lights, and parking the car between two cones.

Para cualquier persona que conduzca normalmente en España, no debe suponer ninguna pega. Obtener el carnet de conducir es tan sencillo ya que entienden que es una necesidad vital, en Texas se usa el coche para todo. Mi supermercado más cercano estaba a 20 minutos andando, y no había aceras, por lo que el coche se hace indispensable. Además, las distancias son enormes para ir a cualquier sitio. Eso si, antes de ir al centro de tráfico, asegúrate de que has visto en internet y te has impreso el certificado, hace menos de 90 días, de los lacrimógenos vídeos Impact Texas Drivers, sobre accidentes debido a hablar por teléfono o mandar mensajes mientras conduces. Es un requisito obligatorio para poder hacer los exámenes.

It shoudn't be a problem to pass that test for anyone that normally drives in Spain. Getting it is so easy because they know it is vital in the US, in Texas you use the car for almost everything. My closest supermarket was 20-minute walk far from home, and with no sidewalks, so the car there is a need. And also distances are huge to go anywhere. But be careful, before you go to the Department of Public Safety, you will need to watch online, and get a certificate about it, of the Impact Texas Drivers videos, about major crashes due to talking and texting while driving. It is compulsory to have it before the test.

Y es que es totalmente cierto, cuando vas conduciendo, la gran mayoría de los conductores a tu lado van hablando por teléfono, sin manos libres, o directamente mandando mensajes. Era legal hasta hace un par de años. Se pegan unos trastazos de aúpa, y muere muchísima gente cada año debido a este tipo de accidentes. Si a eso le sumamos que el carnet es muy fácil, obtenemos conductores potencialmente peligrosos, la mayoría de los cuales no sabe ni siquiera las normas básicas de circulación, así que en las autopistas de Texas es muy normal adelantar por la izquierda, por la derecha, o por donde encuentres el hueco, así como cambiar 5 carriles de golpe para tomar una salida.

And it is absolutely true, when you're driving, most drivers you can see are texting or talking on the phone with no hands-free system. It was legal a couple of years ago. There are a lot of crashes and casualties due to it. Together with easy tests to get your license, we have potentially dangerous drivers, and most of them don't know the basic rules of the road, that's why on Texas highways it is so common to pass on the left, on the right, or wherever you find a spot, as well as crossing 5 lanes at once to take the next exit.
