Aquí estamos de nuevo. Uno de nuestros propósitos para este año es ponernos al día con el blog, y es que hay tanto de lo que escribir… pero para seguir el orden cronológico, os vamos a hablar de nuestra semana de Acción de Gracias.

Here we are again. One of our New Year's resolutions is getting this blog updated, there is so much to write about... but to follow the chronological order we are going to talk about Thanksgiving break.

Acción de Gracias se celebra el cuarto jueves de noviembre. El inicio de estas celebraciones no está claro. Según unas fuentes los colonos ingleses ya trajeron esta tradición a su llegada en la que celebraban el haber tenido una gran cosecha. Otras fuentes hablan de cómo los nativos ayudaron a los colonos a trabajar esta tierra, diferente a la propia, y que celebraron juntos la cosecha en agradecimiento a la ayuda recibida.

Thanksgiving takes place the fourth Thursday of November. The beginning of these festivities is not clear. On the one hand, some people believe that the British colonists used to perform it before coming to America to celebrate a grate harvest. On the other hand, some people talk about how native Americans helped the colonists to work the land, and celebrated together the first harvest.

En la actualidad, implica una semanita de vacaciones en el cole (yuhu!!), el jueves de Acción de Gracias se reúne la familia a comer juntos y después todos a ver fútbol (americano claro, hay dos partidos seguidos por la tarde) y a dormir temprano que al día siguiente hay que madrugar para ser los primeros en aprovecharse de las jugosas ofertas del famoso Black Friday.

Nowadays, it means one week off school (yeah!), on Thursday, Thanksgiving day, all the family dine and watch football together (American Football, of course, don't be mistaken, there are two games in the evening) and straight to sleep so the next day they can get up early and take advantage of the great Black Friday deals.

Nosotros recibimos la visita de mis padres, Pepe y María. Como queríamos que se hicieran una idea de cómo es nuestro día a día aquí, nos quedamos toda la semana en el área de Houston, donde aprovechamos para hacer varias cosas como las que os contamos:

We had my parents, Pepe and María, visiting us. As we wanted them to know how we live here, we spent the whole week in Houston area, so we had time to do lots of things like these:

• Primero tenían que conocer el centro de la ciudad donde vivimos, Katy, y por allí dimos un paseo muy agradable, además, el día acompañaba…

• First of all, they had to know about the downtown of our city, Katy, so we went for a pleasant walk...

• Diferentes visitas al centro de Houston, con sus imponentes rascacielos, que nuestros invitados disfrutaron de lo lindo.

• Some visits to Houston downtown, with its breathtaking skyscrapers, which our visitors enjoyed a lot.

•  Visita a la NASA en Houston… donde lo pasamos como niños!

• We visited the Space Center in Houston (NASA)... we enjoyed it as children!

• Visita a Battleship Texas, un barco acorazado que estuvo en activo durante la Primera y Segunda Guerra Mundial. Una visita muy interesante y que con las historias de mi padre, que hizo la mili en la marina, no podía ser más completa.

• We visited Battleship Texas, which fought in both World War I and World War II. A very interesting visit and with my father stories, who completed his time of mandatory military service in the Navy, couldn't be more complete.

• Kemah.  Ya os hable aquí sobre Kemah. Un paseo en la costa con diferentes restaurantes y un parque de atracciones que en verano está muy bien, ahora daba frío sólo el pensar en montar en la noria.

• Kemah. We talked about it in this post. A boardwalk along the seaside with a handful of restaurants and an amusement park that is good during summer but now you feel cold only with the thought of going on the ferris wheel.

• Paseamos por Brazos Bend State Park donde se pueden ver cocodrilos en libertad... y los vimos... y no pocos!!

• We had a nice walk on Brazos Bend State Park, where you can see lots of alligators in the nature... and we saw them... lots of them!!

-  Hablemos ahora del día de Acción de Gracias. Intentamos aprovecharlo al máximo, empezando por la mañana yendo al desfile de Houston. Un desfile abierto por el pavo, plato principal en Acción de Gracias, y en su carroza iban los dos padrinos del desfile, James Harden, estrella de los Houston Rockets, y José Altuve, segunda base de los Houston Astros. El desfile lo cerraba la carroza de Santa Claus. Entre uno y otro se pudieron ver carrozas de todo tipo, desde las de cuerpos de seguridad, de diferentes asociaciones de grupos étnicos de la ciudad, del ayuntamiento, de bebidas, de equipos deportivos, de marcas de comida (McDonalds no faltó, claro), inflables GIGANTES, bandas de música de institutos y universidades… en fin, un espectáculo como sólo ellos saben hacerlo.

Let's talk now about Thanksgiving Day. We tried to enjoy it to the fullest, starting early in the morning on the parade at Houston downtown. The opening of the parade is the turkey, main dish on this day, and in its float we saw the grand marshals of the parade, James Harden, supertar of the Houston Rockets, and José Altuve, baseman of the Houston Astros. The parade was closed by Santa Claus' float. In between, different floats of any kind: police and firedighters, different ethnic associations of the city, city hall, beverages and food companies and chains like McDonald's, sport teams, huge balloons, high school and college marching bands... in short, a great American-style show.

Para hacer tiempo, nos dimos un paseo por el downtown de Houston, comimos algo rápido y para casa a descansar.

As we had time, we went for a walk through Houston downtown, we grabbed something to eat and went home to have some rest.

Más tarde, tuvimos nuestra cena de Acción de Gracias. Para elegimos Luby's y no fallamos. Pavo, jamón, stuffing, puré de patatas con salsa y unas verduritas... para terminar un par de tartas típicas. Todo estaba bueniiiisimo.
Le dimos un toque murciano con el vino, Juan Gil, DO Jumilla.
Y para terminar... fútbol, por supuesto!!

Later, we had our Thanksgiving dinner. We took out from Luby's and it wasn't a mistake. We had turkey, ham, stuffing, mashed potatoes with gravy and some vegetables... for dessert we had pumpkin and pecan pie. Everything was delicious!!
There was a Murcian touch with the wine. Juan Gil, DO Jumilla.
Later on, we watched football, of course!!
