Washington D.C. (Christmas trip part I)

Y llegaron las vacaciones de Navidad... Para las que nos propusimos un viaje largo, que nos llevaría a visitar varias de las principales ciudades de la costa Este de los Estados Unidos, Washington D.C., Philadelphia y Nueva York.

And Christmas break came... we decided to do a long trip, which would lead us to some of the main cities on the East Coast of the United States, Washington D.C., Philadelpia and New York.

Con una mezcla de felicidad, emoción, morriña y un poco de envidia de los que podían disfrutar de la cena de Nochebuena en casa, nos dirigimos a nuestro primer destino, Washington D.C. Una ciudad relativamente pequeña, pero que es la capital del país, con lo que eso conlleva. Cuando miras el mapa, se ve claramente que los principales edificios y atracciones turísticas están por la misma zona, que se puede ir andando de un lugar a otro. Cuando te pones a ello es cuando te das cuenta de que las distancias son enormes, y lo que parecía un sitio junto a otro, realmente no estaban tan cerca. Pero eso no nos importa, nos encanta andar. Para otros desplazamientos mas largos, o volver a casa tras un día completo, puedes usar el metro o coger un Uber.

We head to our first stop, we were happy, excited, homesick and jealous of those that could enjoy Christmas eve dinner at home, all at the same time. Our first destination was Washington D.C., a not-so-big city, but it is the capitol city of the country. When you look at the map, you can see clearly that the main landmarks in the city are together in the same area, so you can walk from one place to another. But when you are doing it you realize that distances are huge, and what it seemed to be one place next to another, actually they are quite far each other. But we didn't mind, we love walking. For the longest journeys, or to go back home after the whole day walking, you can use either Uber or the subway.

Nos alojamos en un AirBNB, no demasiado lejos del centro, a unos 20 minutos andando de los primeros sitios que queríamos visitar. Así que allá fuimos, la primera mañana, la mañana de navidad, tempranito, dispuestos a ver lo que nos ofrecía la capital del país. Y lo primero que nos encontramos fue frío, mucho frío. Esta zona de la costa Este se caracteriza por unos inviernos bastante duros para lo que nosotros estamos acostumbrados. Temperaturas levemente por encima de los cero grados todo el día, haga sol o no. Nada que ver con el invierno de Texas, mucho mas llevadero.

We stayed at an AirBNB, not very far from downtown, about a 20-minute walk from the first places we wanted to visit. So there we went, the very first morning, Christmas morning, wanting to see what the Capitol city of the country had for us. And the first thing we found was cold. Oh my God, it was so cold. This part of the East coast normally suffers cold winters, colder than we are used to. Temperatures slightly over 30 the whole day, sunny or not. Nothing to do with the winter in Texas, much milder.

Nuestra primera parada fue en la puerta de la casa de nuestro amigo Donald Trump, es decir, la Casa Blanca. Como todo el mundo dice, bastante mas pequeña de lo que uno se imagina o se hace a la idea cuando la ve por televisión. Aunque parezca pequeña, es un edificio enorme, con 6 plantas (varias bajo tierra), 132 habitaciones y 35 baños. Como es normal, fuertemente protegida por miembros del servicio secreto, sin importar si se encuentra dentro o no el presidente (a quien el servicio secreto llama POTUS en sus conversaciones por radio, siglas de President Of The United States).

Our first stop was at our friend Donald Trump's house, this is, The White House. As everybody say, it looks smaller than you imagine or think when you see it on TV. But although it seems small, it is a big 6-story building (some of them underground) with 132 bedrooms and 35 restrooms. As expected, it is strongly protected by members of the secret service, no matter whether the president is in or out (the president is radio called POTUS by the secret service, which stands for The President Of The United States).

No supimos si estaba en casa o no, no nos dejaron llamar al timbre para que saliera a jugar un rato, así que nos hicimos unas fotos y continuamos nuestra marcha.

We dindn't no if he was at home that day, they didn't allow us to ring the bell for him to go out and play, so we took some pictures and kept our walking.

En la parte trasera de la Casa nos encontramos con el Árbol de Navidad, rodeado por varios trenes eléctricos y varios árboles más pequeños, cada uno de los cuales representa un estado, decorados por un instituto del estado correspondiente.

At the back of The House, you can visit the National Christmas Tree, surrounded by several electric trains and smaller Christmas treed, each one representing one State, which ornaments are created by a high school from the State.

Llegamos puntuales al tour que teníamos reservado por el National Mall donde la guía nos contó muchas curiosidades, como por ejemplo, que durante la construcción del Monumento a Washington se quedaron sin fondos y tuvieron que esperar varios años para proseguir la construcción. Cuando consiguieron reanudarla, después de la Guerra Civil, no consiguieron encontrar la misma piedra utilizada anteriormente, por lo que la parte inferior se ve diferente al resto del monumento.

We got on time to the tour that we had booked to visit The National Mall. Our guide told us lots of curiosities, as for instance, how they run out of money during the construction of the Washington Monument and they had to wait until the end of their Civil War to keep on building it, but they couldn't find the same stones, that's why the bottom part looks a bit different than the rest.

A continuación visitamos el memorial de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Un memorial lleno de simbolismos, el principal, la unidad nos hace más fuertes. Dividido en dos partes, nos encontramos con los territorios que formaban entonces parte de los EEUU, a la derecha los del Atlántico y a la izquierda los del Pacífico, ordenados del centro hacia las orillas por orden de importancia, unidos por una cuerda. También nos encontramos con el Muro de la Libertad, que se compone de 4048 estrellas de oro, cada una de las cuales representa a 100 americanos que murieron o desaparecieron en la guerra, con la inscripción "Aquí representamos el precio de la libertad", sin duda, da que pensar...

Next we visited the World War II Memorial. It's full of simbolism, the main one is together we are stronger.  Divided in two parts we find the American territories at that time. The Atlantic ones on the right and the Pacific ones on the left. Sorted from the center by importance, linked by a rope. There it is the Freedom Wall, which has 4048 gold stars, each one represents 100 American service personnel who died or remain missing in the war.

Como guiño simpático nos encontramos en un rincón con la frase "Kilroy was here". Kilroy era un inspector en un astillero durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Cada vez que revisaba un barco, lo marcaba con esa frase y el barco partía hacia la guerra. Los soldados empezaron a hacer suya la frase y a escribirla cuando llegaban a una nueva zona.

As a fun sign, we found in a corner the frase "Kilroy was here". Kilroy was an inspector in a shipyard during World War II. Every time he inspected a ship he wrote that and the ship was sent to war. American soldiers started writing "Kilroy was here" when they got to a new area.

A continuación visitamos el memorial de la Guerra de Vietnam, que consiste en un muro donde aparecen escritos los nombres de los caídos, desde el centro, empezando en el año 1959 hacia un extremo y desde el otro extremo hasta el centro, terminando en el año 1975. El muro está hecho con una piedra negra que tiene efecto espejo, el objetivo de la arquitecto era que el visitante se viera reflejado a la vez que los nombres de los caídos de forma que se unen pasado y presente.

After that we visited Vietnam Veterans Memorial. There we could see the Memorial Wall where there are inscribed the names of the servicemen who died in the war, from the center starting in the year 1959 to one of the ends and then from the other end to the center, finishing in the year 1975. The wall is made in polished granite wich has a mirror effect. The arquitect wanted the visitor see their reflexion mixed with the engraved name to symbolically bring past and present together.

Mirando hacia el memorial se encuentra la estatua de los Tres Soldados, que representa a las tres razas mayoritarias que participaban en el ejército, europeo americano (en el centro), afroamericano (a la derecha) y latino americano (a la izquierda). Los soldados se encuentran mirando de forma solemne el tributo a sus compañeros caídos.

Looking at the memorial there is The Three Soldiers statue, which represents the three mayor ethnic groups in the rank of US combat personnel, European American (center), African American (right) and Latino American (left). Soldiers are looking in a solemn tribute at the names of their fallen comrades.

Nuestra siguiente parada fue el memorial de la Guerra de Korea. Está formado por un muro con imágenes de soldados, equipamiento, gente e incluso animales que tuvieron algo que ver con la guerra. En el centro 19 estatuas de soldados, las caras de los cuales reflejan el sufrimiento del combate, y que están diseñadas para observar al visitante, sea cual sea su posición en el memorial, siempre hay un soldado mirándole. También forman parte del memorial el muro de las Naciones Unidas, con los nombres de los países que participaron, y la Piscina del Recuerdo.

Our next stop was Korean War Veterans Memorial. The main memorial is a wall which has engraved images of soldiers, equipment, people, even animals involved somehow in the war. In the center there are 19 soldier statues. In theis faces you can see the suffering and they are design to look at the visitor whereever he or she is, there is always one soldier looking. There are part of the memorial too the United Nations Wall, engraved the names of the countries that took part somehow in the war and the Pool of Remembrance.

La última parada del tour fue el monumento a Lincoln, menos mal que ya no tenía nada que ver con guerras, que menuda mañana... Es un monumento para homenajear al 16º presidente de los EEUU. El exterior es un templo griego, que se encuentra de frente a la piscina reflectante. Esta piscina reflectante aparece en una de las escenas de la película Forrest Gump donde se reencuentra con su querida Jenny.

The last stop of our tour was the Lincoln Monument, at last something not related to wars as the rest of the tour... It is a memorial to remember the 16th president of the US. Outside it looks like a Greek temple, just opposite the reflection pool. It was the location of one of Forrest Gump scenes where he meets again his beloved Jenny.

En el interior del templo, se encuentra la famosa estatua gigante de Abraham Lincoln la cual refleja dos estados a la vez, la parte a nuestra derecha relajada con la mano apoyada y la parte a nuestra izquierda tensa, con el puño cerrado.

Inside you can find the famous statue of Abraham Lincoln, which shows two different sides of the president, on his left he is relaxed and with the hand laying, on his left he is tense, with his fist closed.

En las escaleras de acceso al monumento a Lincoln tuvo lugar un momento histórico, pues fue donde Martin Luther King Jr., el dia 28 de Agosto de 1963, pronuncio su famoso discurso "I have a dream (Tengo un sueño)...", en el que hablo claramente sobre su deseo de que personas de todas las razas, blancos y negros, pudieran coexistir en paz y en libertad.

On the stairs of the Lincoln Monument took place a historical moment, as there Martin Luther King Jr., on August 23rd 1963, pronounced his famous speech "I have a dream...", in which he talked clearly about his desire of a free and peaceful coexistence between black and white people.

Desde allí nos fuimos andando hasta el cementerio de Arlington, de uso militar, con entrada gratuita, un lugar precioso en el que se respira la paz y la tranquilidad, en directa contraposición con las guerras que causaron la muerte de la mayoría de almas que allí descansan.

From there we had a walk to the Arlington Cemetery, of military use, with free admission. It's a beautiful and peaceful place, you can breathe tranquility there, in contrast to the multiple wars that caused the death of thousands of souls that rest there.

Es un cementerio enorme, muy turístico, donde las tumbas mas visitadas son las del presidente John Fitzgerald Kennedy y su esposa Jackie, y la tumba homenaje al soldado desconocido. Esta  ultima esta dedicada a la memoria de los soldados americanos caídos en batalla y que no pudieron ser identificados. La Guardia de Honor vigila la tumba las 24 horas del día, con una rutina exacta y precisa de pasos, que solo se detiene en caso de que el guardia tenga que llamar la atención a los visitantes que cruzan por donde no deben o por no guardar el silencio y respeto necesario. Una vez vuelve el silencio, el soldado continua su rutina donde la dejo.

It's a huge cemetery, with lots of tourists, and the most visited tombs are the ones of the president John Fitzgerald Kennedy and his wife Jackie, and the Unknown Soldier tomb. This one is dedicated to the memory of the American soldiers killed in action that couldn't be identified. Honor Guards watch the tomb 24/7, with an exact and precise routine of steps, that only stops when the sentinel needs to confront people who cross barriers or are disrespectfully too loud. El día siguiente teníamos dos visitas concertadas. La primera era el Capitolio de los Estados Unidos, y la segunda el Pentágono. La visita al Pentágono nos la aprobaron un día antes de salir de viaje, teniendo hecha la solicitud desde hacia mas de dos meses, y es que ya sabemos como se toman aquí las cosas relacionadas con la seguridad nacional.

The next day we had two scheduled visits. The first one, the Capitol of the United States, and the second, The Pentagon. Our visit to The Pentagon was approved one day before starting our trip, with our application submitted more than two months before. You can see how Americans are when concerning national security.

Era un soleado pero frío día en Washington, y aprovechamos la buena luz para hacernos unas fotos en las afueras del Capitolio, un edificio majestuoso e imponente por fuera. Una vez dentro hicimos un tour que ofrecían donde nos ensenaron los entresijos del edificio así como su historia, incluyendo la placita circular justo debajo de la cúpula, y distintas zonas como las cámaras de los Representantes y del Senado.

It was a sunny but cold day in Washington D.C., so we took advantage of the light to take some pictures around the Capitol building, an impressive construction from the outside. Once inside, we did a tour they offer where they showed us the ins and outs of the buildings, as well as its history, including the rotunda under the main dome, and different areas such as the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Finalizado el tour, hay un pasadizo bajo tierra que te lleva directamente hasta la biblioteca del Congreso. Lo tomamos y visitamos la famosa biblioteca, con su decoración navideña, sus grandes estancias, y su sala de lectura principal a la que no te dejan acceder a no ser que seas un investigador o congresista. Fuera de dicha sala se encuentra la Biblia de Gutemberg, considerada como la primera obra impresa por el inventor. Tan solo hay 48 ejemplares en todo el mundo, si bien casi todos incompletos. La que teníamos enfrente, junto con otras tres que hay en Londres, Gottingen (Alemania) y París, son las únicas completas e impresas en pergamino.

After the tour, there's a passage that leads you to the Congress Library. We took it and visited the famous library with all its Christmas decoration, huge rooms, and the main reading place where you can't get in unless you are a researcher or a congressman. Outside this room we could see the Gutemberg's bible, considered the first book printed by the inventor. There's only 48 of it around the world, most of them incomplete. The one we had before us, together with other three in London, Gottingen (Germany) and Paris, are the only ones complete and printed on parchment.

Terminamos la visita, tomamos algo rápido y cogimos el metro que nos llevaría hasta el edificio del Pentágono, sede del Departamento de Defensa de los Estados Unidos, de ahí que investiguen en profundidad a todas y cada una de las personas que solicitan visitarlo. Esta situado no muy lejos de la ciudad, al otro lado del río Potomac, si bien se trata de otro estado, en este caso Virginia. Como llegamos un poco antes de la hora de la cita, decidimos dar un paseo por los alrededores de tan singular edificio, lo que nos llevo a descubrir el Memorial del 11 de septiembre que también allí tienen, ya que dicho edificio también sufrió el ataque terrorista del 11 de septiembre de 2001, cuando a las 9:37 de la mañana el vuelo 77 de American Airlines se estrello contra uno de los laterales del edificio, causando 184 victimas mortales entre personal del edificio y pasajeros del vuelo.

We finished the visit, had a quick bite and took the subway that would take us to The Pentagon, that hosts the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense, that's why they investigate anyone that applies for a visit. It;s located not very far from the city, on the other bank of the Potomac river, but it is a different State, Virginia. As we got a little bit earlier than our schedule time visit, we had a walk around this singular building, and we found the 9/11 Memorial, since this building was also attacked on September 11th 2001, at 9:37, when the American Airlines flight 77 crashed into one of the sides of the building, causing 184 casualties, counting Pentagon staff and passengers of the flight.

Este monumento homenaje consiste en 184 bancos, uno por cada victima, iluminados individualmente de noche y con una linea de agua que pasa por debajo de cada uno. Es un lugar muy tranquilo que invita a la reflexión.

This memorial is made up of 184 benches, one for each victim, individually lighted at night, and with a water line underneath the benches. It's a peaceful area that invites you to reflect.

El Pentágono es un edificio enorme, de hecho es el mayor edificio de oficinas del mundo. Dentro trabajan mas de 23.000 personas, entre personal civil y militar. Es como una ciudad, y aunque no lo parezca, por dentro tiene tiendas, restaurantes y hasta 7 Starbucks. Cuando entramos, dos militares nos hicieron una visita explicando cada unas de las funciones del edificio.

The Pentagon is an enormous building, in fact it is the biggest office building in the world. It's the workplace for over 23,000 people, military and civilian. It's like a city, and, although it doesn't look like, it has shops, restaurants and even 7 Starbucks inside. When we got in, two military officers took us for a tour explaining what it is done in the different areas of the building.

Después de esto, volvimos al centro de Washington, y quedaba una hora para el cierre del museo Smithsonian del Aire y del Espacio, así que la aprovechamos para una visita rápida. Lo bueno es que muchas de las cosas que allí se encuentran, sobre todo las relacionadas con el espacio, ya las habíamos visto en el Space Center de Houston. Muy curioso e interesante este museo, destacando la parte dedicada al inicio de la aviación con los diseños de Leonardo Da Vinci y los prototipos de los hermanos Wright. También vimos el "Espíritu de San Luis", primer avión que cruzó el océano Atlántico desde Nueva York hasta París.

After this, we went back to Washington downtown and we had one hour before the closing time of Smithsonian Air and Space museum, so we decided to take a quick visit. We'd already seen part of the space exhibition in the Space Center in Houston, so we had enough time to complete the visit. It was very interesting specially the part about the beginning of aviation with Da Vinci's designs and Wright brothers' prototypes. We also saw the "Spirit of Saint Louis", the first airplane that flew over the Atlantic Ocean from New York to Paris.

Tras esta visita, cena y a dormir. Al día siguiente nos esperaba el bus que nos llevaría a nuestra segunda parada del viaje de navidad, ¡Filadelfia!

After this visit, we had dinner and we went to bed early. The next day a coach was waiting to take us to the second stop of this Christmas trip, Philadelphia!
