¿Flota un huevo? / Does an egg float?

Hemos estado trabajando en la densidad, así que la pregunta para este experimento fue "¿flota un huevo en el agua o se hunde?" Ninguno de mis estudiantes tenia muy clara la respuesta, así que les dije que siempre hay una respuesta correcta: depende de la densidad, la del huevo, y la del agua.

We've been working on density, and the question for this experiment was "Does an egg float or sink in water?" None of my students was really sure about it. I told them that there's always a right answer: it depends on the density, of the water, and of the egg.

Algo flota en el agua cuando su densidad es menor que la del agua. Por lo que si la densidad de un huevo es mayor que la del agua, se hundirá. Si es menor, flotará. ¡Vamos a verlo!

Something floats on water when its density is lower than the density of the water. So if the density of an egg is higher than the density of the water, it'll sink. If it's lower, it'll float. Let's see it!

Para empezar, ponemos 300 ml de agua en un vaso de precipitados, luego ponemos el huevo dentro y... se hunde. Esto significa que Densidad Huevo > Densidad Agua.

To start, we pour 300 ml of water in a beaker, then we put the egg inside and... it sinks. That means that Egg Density > Water Density.

Viendo este hecho, ¿qué podemos hacer para hacerlo flotar? ¡Quiero que mi huevo flote! Sin cambiar el huevo, la única opción que nos queda es cambiar la densidad del agua, necesitamos hacerla mas densa.

Having a look at this fact, what can we do to make it float? I want my egg to float! Without changing the egg, the only option is raising the density of the water, we need to make it higher.

Para hacerlo, vamos a poner dos cucharadas de sal en el agua y a mezclarla bien. Cuando la sal se ha disuelto, lo intentamos de nuevo, pero el huevo todavía se hunde. Necesitamos más sal.

To do so, we are going to put two spoons of salt in the water and mix it. When it is dissolved, we try again with the egg but it still sinks. We need more salt.

Tras añadir dos cucharadas más de sal, lo intentamos de nuevo y ¡ahora flota! Esto significa que Densidad Huevo < Densidad Agua.

After adding two more spoons of salt, we try again and now it floats! This means that Egg Density < Water Density.

En alguno de los grupos intentamos el mismo experimento pero usando azúcar en lugar de sal. Nos dimos cuenta que hace falta más azúcar que sal para elevar la densidad del agua. Para conseguirlo necesitamos ¡ocho cucharadas de azúcar! Y el resultado es mucho mas pegajoso.

In some groups we tried the same experiment but using sugar instead of salt. We realized that we need more sugar than salt to raise the density of the water. To make it we needed eight spoons of sugar! And everything ends up very sticky.
