Y llegó el momento de volver a casa. Y no se puede evitar el tener esa mezcla de sentimientos... por una parte alegría, alegría por volver a casa con la familia y amigos que tantísimo hemos echado de menos, sobretodo a nuestra princesa Emma, que ganas de darle un achuchón!!!

It's time to go back home. We cannot help but have this mixed feelings... On the one hand happiness because we're going back home with our family and friends that we missed a lot, specially our little princess Emma, looking forward to giving her a bear hug!!

Por otro lado tristeza... hemos vivido este año con mucha intensidad, intentando aprovecharlo al máximo por si, como hemos decidido, esta aventura se quedaba en solo un año...

On the other hand, sadness... we enjoyed this year to the fullest, trying to make every moment count, just in case this adventure were to last only one year, as it is...

Echaremos de menos nuestro bingo semanal en Baker Street Pub, nuestro "bar de la esquina", los días de partido y esas noches latinas de la mano de Shekere Band, los jueves con oferta de hamburguesas y tanto momentos vividos en este lugar.

We'll miss our weekly bingo at Baker Street Pub, our local bar, those game days, latin nights with Shekere band, its Burger Thursday and lots and lots of moments in this bar.

Echaremos de menos el deporte, ya sea baseball, football o la NBA, que aunque en casa también hay baloncesto, nada tiene que ver.

We'll miss all the sport games, it doesn't matter if it is baseball, football or the NBA, we have basketball at home too but it is not the same.

Echaremos de menos nuestras carreras semanales (y la cervecita de después) con nuestros amigos de No Label Running Club, en especial a nuestra amiga Diane, que siendo completos desconocidos, nos echó una mano cuando la necesitamos.

We'll miss our weekly runs (and beer afterwards) with our friends of No Label Running Club, specially our friend Diane, who gave us a hand in a moment of need, even though she didn't know us.

También las carreras de fin de semana, nunca habíamos pagado tanto por correr, aunque bien que merecían la pena, por muchos motivos.

We are also going to miss our runs on Saturdays too, we've never paid such amounts for running, but it's worth it.

También añoraremos a nuestros queridos vecinos Tanya y Chris, que nos han introducido un poquito mas en la cultura americana, y más concrétamente las costumbres de Texas.

We're gonna miss our dearest neighbours Tanya and Chris, we learn a lot of the American culture, and even more about Texas traditions with them.

Esos entrenamientos con los compañeros de Royal ISD y nuestro entrenador Gil. Y por supuesto a nuestros compañeros y niños. Y este grupo tan variopinto de españoles... hemos pasado muy buenos momentos.

Those training days with our workmates in Royal ISD and out trainer and friend Gil. And of course our colleagues and kids. That varied Spanish group too... we had great moments together.

Echaremos de menos a nuestra querida Mimi y a Letty (Doctora Guzman, ¡¡¡suena importante!!!), sin las que esta aventura no había sucedido y con las que tantísimos momentos hemos compartido.

We'll miss our dear Mimi and, of course, Letty (Dr. Guzman, it sounds so important!!!) who we spent tons of great moments with. Without them we would've never had this opportunity.

Echaremos de menos nuestra urbanización, la que hemos disfrutado a tope, tanto el gym como el clubhouse, la habitación de juegos, el cine y su preciosa piscina.

Our apartment resort, we really enjoyed the gym, clubhouse, the game room, the theatre and its wonderful pool.

En este año hemos visitado Nueva York, que ya lo conocíamos, Washington D.C., Filadelfia, Austin, San Antonio, Nueva Orleans, Las Vegas, El Gran Cañon del Colorado, Monument Valley, The Horse Shoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park y San Francisco, que no está nada mal...

During this year we have visited New York, which we already knew, Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Austin, San Antonio, New Orleans, Las Vegas, The Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, The Horse Shoe Bend, Antelope Canyon, Chicago, Los Angeles, Sequoia National Park and San Francisco, it's not bad...

Nos hemos perdido en un laberinto de maíz. Hemos buscado huevos de pascua.

We got lost in a corn maze and we did and Easter egg hunt.

Hemos ido a un concierto de Backstreet Boys, a un partido de fútbol, otro de baseball, otro de fútbol americano, a 7 de la NBA (6 de nuestros queridos Rockets y uno de los míticos Chicago Bulls) y mucho más...

We have attended a Backstreet Boys concert, a soccer game, a baseball game, a football game, 7 NBA games (6 Rockets and 1 Chicago Bulls) and so much more...

Hemos paseado por Kemah y disfrutado del Pleasure Pier en Galveston, sentirnos auténticos cowboys en el Rodeo de Houston.

We have spend the day in Kemah and enjoyed the Pleasure Pier in Galveston and felt like real cowboys in the Houston Rodeo.

Y hemos comido, mucho, tomado cafés interminables, quemado nubes en el fuego...

We have eaten, a lot, we have had never ending coffees, had S'mores...

En resumen, esta aventura ha merecido totalmente la pena. No vamos a negar que ha tenido sus malos momentos, como todo, pero al final con lo que hay que quedarse es con las cosas buenas y con la maleta de recuerdos que nos llevamos.

To sum up, this adventure has been totally worth it. It's true that it had its bad moments, it always happens, but at the end of the day you keep the good memories.

Gracias por acompañarnos en este viaje y por seguir nuestras aventuras. Va a ser interesante cuando dentro de unos años lo volvamos a leer y recordemos esta experiencia irrepetible.

Thanks for staying with us along this journey. It's going to be interesting when in some years we read this blog and remember this unique experience.

De todas formas, se nos quedan muchas cosas por contar, cientos de fotos por enseñar, con lo cual, pese a que pronto estemos en España, os seguiremos contando cositas americanas cada cierto tiempo.

Anyways, we still have a lot of things to tell, hundreds of pictures to share, so, although we will be in Spain, we'll keep telling you little American stories every now and then.

Viaje de verano / Summer trip: California y más... / California and more

Llegó el 28 de mayo y con él, el fin del curso escolar y las ansiadas vacaciones! Y como no nos podemos estar quietos, al día siguiente ya estábamos rumbo a Las Vegas para empezar el último viaje de esta aventura americana, que duraría un total de 12 noches.

It was May 28th, and that meant the end of the academic year and... our desired holydays!! As we can't be still, the next day we were flying to Las Vegas to start our last trip of this American adventure, which would last a total of 12 nights.

Como os he mencionado antes, nuestra primera parada fue la ciudad del pecado, que ya visitamos anteriormente en Spring Break, aunque esa primera vez fue solo una noche, como toma de contacto. Esta vez teníamos dos días con sus dos noches completas, los cuales exprimimos y disfrutamos al máximo con lo típico en esta ciudad: comiendo, bebiendo y apostando (vídeo). Si a esto le sumamos el espectáculo permanente del mago David Copperfield y la exposición del Titanic, se convierte en una experiencia inolvidable.

As we said before, our first stop was the Sin City, which we visited in our Spring Break trip, but that time it was only one night, our first contact. This time we had two complete days and nights that we squeezed and enjoyd to the fullest doing what you are supossed to do in this city: eat, drink and gamble (video). If you add the David Copperfield permanent show and the Titanic exhibition, it turns into an unforgettable experience.

Al cabo de estas dos noches, recogimos nuestro coche de alquiler y nos pusimos en marcha en dirección a nuestro siguiente objetivo, Los Ángeles (aquí conocido como L.A.).

After those two nights, we picked up our rental car and started driving towards our next destination, Los Angeles (AKA L.A., so L.A. from now on).

L.A. no es lo que nosotros llamaríamos una ciudad "bonita" o "con encanto". La zona centro está plagada de mendigos y no hay demasiado que ver. Aun así dimos un largo paseo y visitamos el Museo de los Grammy (premios de la música), con una exposición sobre los 25 años de carrera de Backstreet Boys, y los alrededores del Staples Center, donde juegan los Lakers, los Clippers y las Sparks (baloncesto NBA y WNBA) y los Kings (hockey hielo, NHL).

L.A. is not what I´d call a "beautiful" or "charming" city. The downtown is full of homeless and there are not a lot of things to do or see. Anyways, we had a long walk there and visited the Grammy Museum (music awards), including a great exhibition about the 25 year career of the Backstreet Boys. We also saw the surrounding area of the Staples Center, where L.A. Lakers, Clippers, Sparks (basketball, NBA and WNBA) and Kings (hockey, NHL) play.

Aunque si el centro de L.A. es un poco decepcionante, tiene otras zonas alrededor que merecen más la pena, como Hollywood y su paseo de la fama, o las zonas de playa como Santa Mónica y Venice Beach, que siempre recordamos por "Los vigilantes de la playa", con David Hasselhoff y Pamela Anderson corriendo por la arena para salvar a alguien. También por la zona nos encontramos la playa de Malibú, que tiene muy poquitos accesos públicos, ya que todas las lujosas casas de primera línea tienen su acceso directo por detrás a la playa. Desafortunadamente, no pudimos disfrutarlas como se merece, como podéis comprobar en las fotos, no hacía tiempo de estar en bañador...

Although L.A. downtown is a bit disappointing, there are different areas in the outskirts that are worth paying a visit, such as Hollywood and its Walk of Fame, or the beach towns like Santa Monica and Venice beach, that we all remember thanks to "Baywatch", with David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson running on the sand to save someone's life. Not very far we also find Malibu beach, with just a few public access, as all the first line houses have their own back door to the beach. Unfortunately we couldn't enjoy as it was supossed, as you can see in some pictures, because we didn't have the best weather conditions.

El último día antes de dejar L.A. visitamos los estudios de Warner Bros, en Hollywood. Una bonita visita en la que nos explicaron sobre las películas y series rodadas en los estudios y decorados que allí se encuentran (Friends, Gilmore girls, Los Vengadores, The Big Bang Theory, museo de los vehículos de Batman, el Show de Ellen DeGeneres...). Pudimos hacernos un montón de fotos, incluso con un Oscar (¡de verdad! ¡pesa un montón!), si bien la que más ilusión nos hizo fue la del Central Perk, el café de Friends.

The last day before leaving L.A. we went to the Warner Bros studios, in Hollywood. It was a terrific experience, they told us about movies and series shot in their studios and sets that we could see (Friends, Gilmore Girls, Avengers, The Big Bang Theory, Batman's cars museum, Ellen DeGeneres show...). We could take a ton of pictures, even one with an Oscar (a real one! it's so heavy!), however our favourite was the one at the coffee bar from the show Friends, the Central Perk. 

Más tarde caminamos por el Paseo de la Fama de Hollywood viendo todas las estrellas de actores de cine, teatro y músicos que allí se encuentran. Tras unos días en la zona de L.A., pusimos rumbo norte, donde nuestra siguiente parada fue el Sequoia National Park.

Later that day we wandered  the Hollywood Walk of Fame, looking at all the stars on the floor, of movie actors, theatre actors and musicians and bands. After some days at the L.A. area, we headed North, as our next stop would be Sequoia National Park.

En el Sequoia National Park se encuentran los seres vivos más grandes de la Tierra, las sequoias. Las sequoias son árboles que pueden alcanzar los 100 metros de altura, y los 12 metros de diámetro. Entre todas, la que mayor volumen de madera tiene es el llamado General Sherman, de 95 metros de alto y 11 de diámetro. Las hay más altas, también más gruesas, pero ninguna ocupa más volumen que ésta.

At Sequoia National Park there are the biggest living things on Earth. They are trees that can reach 330 ft height and 39 ft of diameter. Among all the sequoias, the one considered the biggest, the one with the highest amount of wood, is called General Sherman, which is 311 ft tall and 36 ft of diameter. There are some taller, some others with a bigger diameter, but none occupies a higher volume than General Sherman.

Nuestro último día antes de llegar a San Francisco lo dedicamos a recorrer la carretera denominada "Big Sur", entre los pueblos de San Luis Obispo y Carmel-by-the-sea. Como anécdota os diremos que Clint Eastwood fue alcalde de esta última localidad.

Our last day before arriving to San Francisco was devoted to drive the so-called "Big Sur", a road by the coast, connecting the cities of San Luis Obispo and Carmel-by-the-sea. As an anecdote, we can say that Clint Eastwood was mayor of this last city.

Big Sur es una carretera que circula encajada entre el océano Pacífico y una pequeña cordillera montañosa, lo que hace que tenga muy pocos accesos entre el principio y el final. Su recorrido está salpicado de playas grandes, pequeñas calas, acantilados, y pudimos disfrutar de varias colonias de elefantes marinos que tienen tomadas literalmente varias de las playas. Con frecuencia se suelen ver delfines, también ballenas jorobadas, en su migración al norte en busca de aguas más frías, pero no tuvimos la suerte de verlas. Aún así, fue un día estupendo de carretera y naturaleza.

Big Sur is a road squeezed between the coast line of the Pacific ocean and a small mountain range, so there are only a few in and outs. It's full of big beaches, small coves, cliffs, and we could enjoy the presence of different groups of sea elephants that made some beaches their home. It is quite common to see dolphins, and also humpback whales on their Summer migration to the North looking for colder waters, but we weren't lucky enough to see them. Anyways, it was a great road and nature day. 

Y llegamos a San Francisco, ciudad de película. Nos alojamos en un AirBNB, en el barrio de Castro, núcleo gay por excelencia de la ciudad. Un barrio multicolor todo el año, y más todavía en este mes de junio en que se celebra el orgullo en todo el país.

And we finally got to San Francisco, beautiful city. We stayed at an AirBNB, in the Castro neighbourhood, gay spot of the city. It's a colourful place all year round, but specially in June, as the gay pride is celebrated all over the state.

Disfrutamos del barrio y su ocio diurno y nocturno, al igual que pudimos pasear por la ciudad, sus famosas cuestas sube y baja, y sus tranvías "cable-car" que todavía circulan por ellas.

We enjoyed the area and its nightlife, as well as we could walk the city, its famous slopes going up and down, and the cable-cars that ride the streets.

También paseamos por la zona del Golden Gate, uno de los puentes más conocidos del mundo (si no el que más). Y como no, tampoco podíamos irnos de la ciudad sin visitar la isla de Alcatraz y su antigua prisión de la cual se han escrito cientos de novelas y guiones de películas.

We also walked the area where the Golden Gate is, it's probably one of the most famous bridges in the world (if not the most). And we couldn't miss Alcatraz island and its old prison that inspired hundreds of novels and movies.

Si en la Big Sur pudimos deleitarnos viendo a los elefantes marinos en su entorno natural, en San Francisco pudimos ver otra colonia, en este caso de leones marinos, que hace años establecieron su hogar en el muelle 39 de la bahía (video).

Along the Big Sur we saw sea elephants in their natural habitat. What we saw in San Francisco was a group of sea lions that settle a few years ago at Pier 39 of the bay (video).

Con unos cuantos días de visita a la ciudad gay por excelencia, la del Golden Gate, la de las cuestas, donde Levi Strauss inventó los pantalones vaqueros, pusimos final a este último viaje por los EEUU. Toca ahora volver a nuestra querida Texas y ultimar todos los detalles para nuestra vuelta definitiva a tierras españolas. ¡Nos vemos!

After a few days at the city of the Golden Gate, the gay center of the world, the slopes city, where Levi Strauss made the first pair of jeans, we finished our last trip around USA. Now it is time to go back to Texas to finish everything and get ready to get back home to Spain. See you soon!!
